Laos Explores International Exchange at WorldSkills Shanghai

Laos participated in the 48th WorldSkills Competition, which kicked off in Shanghai, China, seeking opportunities for international skill exchange and human resource development. This competition is one of the world's leading vocational skills competitions, with 1,385 competitors from 68 countries and regions vying in 64 skill events. Laotian participants likely aimed to improve their skill levels and gain international experience within the context of infrastructure development and industrial cooperation promoted under China's Belt and Road Initiative. Under its one-party system, Laos prioritizes its relationships with China and Vietnam for economic development and strengthening international cooperation, making participation in such international events part of its diplomatic strategy. Seven new skills debuted at the competition, reflecting emerging industry trends, including rail vehicle technology, unmanned aerial systems, intelligent security technology, and software testing. While the Lao economy heavily relies on tourism and hydropower, interest in these new skill areas suggests a potential drive towards diversifying its industrial structure in the future. China has ranked first in gold medals and overall points in the past four WorldSkills competitions and has deepened cooperative relationships with many countries, including Laos, through vocational education programs like "Luban Workshops." A key challenge for Laos will be how it benefits from these programs and connects them to domestic skill development. Laos' economic growth is heavily dependent on its relations with China and Vietnam, and improving international skill levels will be a crucial factor in strengthening these relationships and promoting economic development.
