DENR Eyes Monitoring System for Endangered Samar Rafflesia Flower

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Samar Island Natural Park (DENR-SINP) is developing a Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS) to conserve the endangered Samar Rafflesia (Rafflesia manillana). This initiative follows the rediscovery and documentation of the rare flowering plant in Sitio Bagong Silang, Barangay Guirang in Basey town, Samar. The DENR-SINP aims to identify the Rafflesia's habitat and continuously monitor its population and status to protect it from extinction. The Samar Rafflesia is considered a highly important species from a biodiversity perspective due to its unique form and ecology. However, its survival is threatened by factors such as habitat destruction and climate change. The implementation of BMS will enable scientists and conservationists to formulate and execute conservation strategies based on more accurate data. This project is not only a significant step in biodiversity conservation within the Philippines but also expected to contribute to international nature conservation efforts. The DENR also plans to strengthen collaboration with local communities to raise awareness about Rafflesia conservation.
