Bali Tightens Visa Rules for Foreign Influencers Creating Paid Content

Indonesia's popular tourist destination, Bali, is tightening visa regulations for foreign influencers and content creators. The Australian government's travel advisory platform, SmartTraveller, issued a warning on July 3, urging travelers planning to produce monetized online content in Bali to ensure they obtain the appropriate visa before arrival. "Make sure you understand your visa conditions, entry and exit requirements. Ensure you have the right visa for your trip," the advisory stated. It emphasized that working, conducting research, or volunteering on a tourist visa is illegal, including posting content online for revenue, payment, sponsorship, or other commercial purposes. Creating content for commercial purposes while on a tourist visa could be considered a breach of visa conditions, even if the content is published after departure from Indonesia. Bali, named the world's best destination this year by Tripadvisor, has long been a hub for influencers drawn by its beaches, culture, and resorts. Many Indonesian businesses collaborate with foreign creators, offering complimentary products or stays in exchange for social media exposure rather than direct payment. Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration has previously warned that promoting businesses on social media for free goods or services constitutes work and is strictly prohibited under a tourist visa. The office clarified on May 7 that "It is not always about payment. Immigration authorities may look at the purpose of stay, the type of activity, and whether there is economic value behind it." Authorities have intensified inspections through the Dharma Dewata Immigration Patrol Task Force, monitoring social media activity and conducting patrols in popular tourist areas like Canggu and Ubud. Violations can lead to substantial fines, immediate deportation, and permanent re-entry bans. Between January 1 and April 12, 2026, Bali authorities deported 165 foreigners and detained 62 for immigration violations. An Australian content creator, speaking anonymously, shared that she previously worked remotely for two Australian companies while on a tourist visa in Bali. "There are so many people I met there who were doing the same thing, everywhere you look there are co-living and co-working spaces for creators, influencers, and remote workers," she said. "This is going to make life a lot harder for people who do that kind of work while living it up in Indonesia."
