Most Common Names in Indonesia Revealed: Sutrisno and Sulastri Top Java, Junaidi and Nurhayati Lead Sumatra

The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs has released statistics on the most common names used across Indonesia. Notably, in Java, 'Sutrisno' for males and 'Sulastri' for females have emerged as the most prevalent names. Teguh Setyabudi, the Director General of Dukcapil, stated that these names are characteristically common in Java. He reported that there are 102,519 males named Sutrisno and 135,421 females named Sulastri in Java, with these names being popular across all age demographics. In contrast, Sumatra presents a different naming landscape, with 'Junaidi' for males and 'Nurhayati' for females being the most common. Teguh Setyabudi attributed this prevalence partly to the significant number of Javanese transmigrants in Sumatra. Indeed, there are 45,219 individuals named Junaidi and 83,112 named Nurhayati in Sumatra. Interestingly, Junaidi and Nurhayati are not only popular in Sumatra but also rank as the most common names in Kalimantan (Borneo). Kalimantan has 12,940 males named Junaidi and 14,342 females named Nurhayati. The name Nurhayati appears to be widely popular across many other islands as well, including Sulawesi, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua. In Sulawesi, 23,760 women bear the name Nurhayati. However, unlike in Kalimantan, the name Junaidi is less popular than Sudirman, which is the most common male name in Sulawesi. Region-specific trends indicate that in Maluku (particularly North Maluku), 'Rahman' and 'Nurhayati' are prominent. In Nusa Tenggara, 'Ahmad' is the most common male name, while 'Nurhayati' leads for females. In Papua, 'Ismail' is the most frequent male name, and 'Nurhayati' for females. Bali, known for its tourism, shows a distinct naming pattern, with 'I Wayan Sudiarta' being the most common male name and 'Ni Nyoman Sari' for females.
