Vietnam Hosts Dialogue on Food Loss Reduction and Green Transition

On September 25, the Youth Union of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in coordination with the Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam, the Vietnam Food Bank Network, and Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment, organized a dialogue in Hanoi on policy impacts and solutions for reducing food loss and waste. This meeting marks a significant step towards building a sustainable food system. The dialogue addressed the current state of food loss and waste, its environmental impact, and associated economic losses. The potential for Vietnam to suffer billions of US dollars in environmental damage annually was highlighted, underscoring the urgency of countermeasures. Participants exchanged views on concrete measures to promote the reduction of food loss and waste and accelerate the transition to a circular economy. These measures include improving the efficiency of the entire supply chain, public awareness campaigns, and the adoption of innovative technologies. While Vietnam has achieved remarkable economic growth in recent years, environmental challenges have also become apparent. Food loss and waste are not only a waste of resources but also a source of greenhouse gas emissions, making them an urgent issue in the context of green transition. This dialogue is also noteworthy for providing an opportunity for students to debate food loss and waste issues, aiming to raise awareness among the next generation and foster their proactive approach to finding solutions. The Vietnamese government aims to balance economic growth with environmental conservation and is accelerating efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through strengthened international cooperation.
