Cayetano Defends Taguig Lakeshore Projects, Calls Lacson a 'Gossipmonger'
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano defended Taguig City's lakeshore development projects, dismissing Senator Panfilo Lacson's criticisms as 'hearsay and gossip.' Lacson had alleged that these developments negatively impact the environment and residents.
Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Tuesday defended Taguig City government’s lakeshore developments and branded Sen. Panfilo Lacson a “Marites” (gossipmonger) and “Senator-Judge Troll.” Cayetano also said Lacson's allegations are based on “hearsay.” In a Facebook livestream shortly before the Senate impeachment court resumed its proceedings Tuesday afternoon, Cayetano responded to Lacson’s allegations that the city’s lakeshore development projects could negatively impact the environment and the lives of residents. “I’m not saying that he’s not a senator. He’s a senator. But what he’s doing is that he’s a Marites, and also a Senator-Judge Troll,” Cayetano said. “He’s not even a senator. He’s a troll.” Lacson, a former Philippine National Police chief, had earlier accused the Taguig City government of proceeding with the lakeshore development without adequate environmental impact assessments and public consultations, potentially displacing residents and harming marine life. Cayetano, however, countered that all necessary permits and clearances were obtained, and that the project would bring economic benefits to the city and its residents. He accused Lacson of spreading misinformation and engaging in personal attacks instead of focusing on substantive issues. “He’s just making noise. He’s trying to get attention. He’s not looking at the facts,” Cayetano added. “He’s just relying on hearsay and gossip, which is typical of a Marites.” The exchange underscores the often-contentious nature of political debates in the Philippines, particularly concerning large-scale development projects. While proponents argue for economic progress and urban improvement, critics raise concerns about environmental sustainability and the welfare of local communities. The differing viewpoints highlight the complex challenges faced by the country in balancing growth with responsible governance and environmental stewardship.
