Double Waterspouts Appear Off Vung Tau Coast, Surprising Residents and Tourists

A second waterspout has appeared off the coast of Vung Tau, Vietnam, in less than a week, surprising residents and tourists. The phenomenon, which occurred on September 25, is linked to specific meteorological conditions. Fortunately, no damage has been reported. Around 7 AM on September 25, a large, funnel-shaped waterspout emerged over Bai Sau beach, near Hon Ba island. It dissipated naturally after more than 30 minutes. Shortly after, a smaller waterspout appeared nearby. This rare event drew the attention of many locals and tourists. At the time of the waterspouts' appearance, there were few boats operating in the Bai Sau area, and no damage to life or property was recorded. Phuong Thao, a resident of Vung Tau city, said, "Around 7:20 AM, I saw a waterspout in the Bai Sau area, but I was in a hurry for work and didn't have time to take a picture. My husband had also captured a rare moment of a waterspout a few days ago." This is the second waterspout to appear off the coast of Vung Tau in less than a week. Previously, on the afternoon of September 20, a large waterspout, hundreds of meters high, appeared off Bai Truoc beach during a thunderstorm. Many cargo ships were operating offshore at the time. After about 20 minutes of moving towards the offshore rain clouds, the waterspout weakened and gradually dissipated. Many residents and tourists watched and took photos. According to meteorological agencies, waterspouts typically form within strong thunderstorms and are more likely to appear during transitional seasons or when a tropical convergence zone or trough combines with a large source of moisture. Ships operating at sea are advised to observe carefully and proactively stay away from areas with strongly developing storm clouds to avoid waterspouts or sudden gusts of wind, which can pose a danger to life and property.
