Thai MP Questions Government on Corruption Allegations and Agricultural Issues

Mr. Chaitana Dechdecho, a Member of Parliament for the Democrat Party, has raised concerns about a corruption investigation into a public lighting project in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, valued at nearly 60 million baht. He stated that the project involves the procurement of lighting fixtures at a cost of 73,000 baht per unit, and that a deputy provincial administrative organization (PAO) governor allegedly threatened disciplinary action against officials who questioned the necessity of using a specific "innovative lamp" model. Mr. Chaitana intends to submit information to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the financial links between the company supplying the lamps and the PAO executives. He has called on the Comptroller General's Department and the Prime Minister to scrutinize the procurement process for the seven lighting projects to ensure compliance with regulations and to investigate any signs of corruption. Mr. Chaitana criticized the alleged pressure on officials as an abuse of power and stated that the Prime Minister, as the supervisor of local administrative organizations, must order a thorough investigation. Furthermore, Mr. Chaitana discussed the opposition's plan to submit a no-confidence motion against the government. The Democrat Party, along with other opposition parties, is committed to debating this motion, likely under Article 151 of the constitution. Regarding the timing of the no-confidence debate, Mr. Chaitana indicated that it would likely occur after the budget debate next week and pending the Election Commission's decision on September 14 regarding the Senate election fraud case. While the specific topics for his impeachment debate remain undisclosed, he highlighted the government's perceived lack of progress on critical issues such as agricultural prices, fisheries, and infrastructure development, contrasting it with the progress on the dual-track railway project.
