Prabowo Announces Central Government Will Take Over Teacher Recruitment

President Prabowo Subianto has announced that the central government will take over the teacher recruitment process. This policy aims to create a more objective, measurable, and quality-oriented recruitment system. "But now, if I'm not mistaken, yes, we are discussing the right to appoint teachers back to the central government," Prabowo stated, citing a release from Bakom RI on Wednesday (16/9). He emphasized that the national education system must be improved comprehensively, especially in the recruitment and quality enhancement of teachers. Prabowo also touched upon the challenges arising from delegating teacher recruitment authority to local governments. He pointed out that local officials might appoint relatives or campaign supporters as teachers, rather than prioritizing objective quality and suitability. "But in its implementation, if it's handed over to regency governments, provincial governments, do we believe in the quality of teacher recruitment? We have to talk about reality. Is the regent objective or does he appoint his relatives as teachers? His campaign team? And so on. This is a dilemma for us," he said. The government is also considering providing courses and skill enhancement programs for educators to keep them updated with the latest teaching methods and educational technology. In addition to improving recruitment and teacher education, Prabowo revealed plans for a "crash program" to recruit top graduates from various disciplines to assist the most underdeveloped schools. "One of the steps I am considering to overcome this problem is a crash program, perhaps I will recruit the best graduates from all faculties to become teachers. Let's say emergency teachers that we deploy to schools," he said. Another alternative is to involve civil servants who are already working to participate in short assignments to help specific schools, for two to three weeks, depending on local needs and conditions.
