Deadly Bomb Ambush Kills 2 Defense Volunteers in Southern Thailand

A violent roadside ambush in southern Thailand has left two defense volunteers dead and 16 others injured. The shocking attack happened on Friday afternoon in the Sukhirin district of Narathiwat province. A group of heavily armed insurgents targeted a transport truck carrying the local security team. At the time of the sudden attack, the volunteer squad was returning home from a community event. They had just finished competing in a traditional boat race at a popular local festival. Sadly, their peaceful journey back to their base quickly turned into a deadly nightmare. The deadly incident took place at around 2:50 p.m. in the rural Bluka Yaing village area. The volunteers were driving in a white six-wheel Isuzu truck along a quiet, narrow route. Suddenly, a massive homemade bomb exploded from deep underneath the surface of the asphalt road. The powerful blast was so strong that it flipped the large transport truck completely upside down. According to police, the explosion created a giant crater measuring two meters deep and three meters wide. The attackers had carefully stuffed the explosive materials inside a heavy 50-kilogram cooking gas cylinder. Immediately after the bomb went off, hidden gunmen opened fire on the trapped and injured officers. The unknown number of insurgents had been hiding in the thick, overgrown jungle beside the road. Despite the total chaos, the surviving defense volunteers quickly grabbed their weapons and bravely shot back. The fierce gun battle forced the attackers to stop shooting and flee deep into the forest. They used their excellent knowledge of the local terrain to escape the responding government security forces. Once the shooting finally stopped, emergency teams rushed in to pull the victims from the crushed truck. Rescue workers quickly transported all the victims to the nearby Sukhirin Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, two brave volunteers, identified as Irin Kaewrawang and Natthanan Kaewsupho, died from their severe injuries. The remaining 16 officers suffered various wounds, with several reported to be in very critical condition. Police and military units soon arrived to secure the bloody crime scene and gather vital evidence. Investigators found scattered bomb parts and wires hidden in the tall grass near the deep crater. The entire community is now mourning the terrible loss of these men who served their local district. Authorities strongly believe this cruel attack was an act of revenge by local rebel insurgent groups. On September 9, government security forces killed two known bomb-makers during a shootout on Tawe mountain. The insurgents most likely planned this roadside ambush to retaliate against the state’s recent military success.
