Cambodian Woman Sentenced to 2 Years for Assault and Threats in Love Triangle Dispute

A 30-year-old Cambodian woman has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined 4 million riels (approximately $1,000 USD) for assaulting and threatening another woman in a dispute over a shared lover. The incident, which occurred in August 2024, involved a love triangle with a Nigerian man. The Phnom Penh Municipal Court recently handed down the sentence to the accused, Lim Sokleap, for the crimes of intentional assault and threats. According to the indictment, the accused was arrested by Phnom Penh police on September 11, 2024. Police investigation reports indicate that on September 10, 2024, the accused was detained in connection with an assault incident that occurred on August 11, 2024, at a condominium in Phnom Penh. The accused, who previously worked at the Jinbei 3 Casino in Preah Sihanouk Province, had been in a relationship with the Nigerian man for over three years. On the day of the incident, the accused traveled to Phnom Penh for medical treatment and to visit her lover. After arriving late at night, she stayed at her sister's house and the following morning, accompanied by her sister, visited the condominium where her lover resided. Upon arrival at the condominium, the accused knocked on her lover's door, but there was no response. After waiting for a considerable time, she became enraged and began kicking the door. Approximately 30 minutes later, the victim, another woman, opened the door. Seeing the victim with her lover, the enraged accused grabbed the victim's hair, pushed her onto the sofa, and threatened her with a vegetable knife. Although the lover managed to disarm the accused of the knife, she then retrieved scissors from a kitchen drawer and threatened the victim again. As the victim attempted to escape, the accused dropped the scissors and, grabbing a fruit knife, dragged the victim into the lover's bedroom and threatened to kill her. Furthermore, the accused allegedly coerced the victim into demanding compensation from the Nigerian man and ceasing contact with him. However, the victim refused to demand money from the Nigerian man, stating that she considered him her lover and not merely a sexual partner. This case highlights a dispute arising from an international romantic relationship and the subsequent violence that can occur.
