Iran Attacks US Facilities in Middle East - Limited Indirect Impact on Cambodia Anticipated

On the morning of March 3rd, Iran launched a drone attack against the US Embassy in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. This attack occurred amidst escalating tensions between Iran and the United States/Israel in the Middle East. The US President indicated that this series of military operations could last for over a month. According to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense, two drones attacked the US Embassy in Riyadh, causing limited fires and minor damage. This follows previous attacks by Iran on the US Embassy in Kuwait. Several countries considered relatively peaceful in the Middle East have become targets of Iranian attacks, seen as retaliation for attacks by the US and Israel. Recent targets have included two Amazon commercial centers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A drone also crashed near another Amazon commercial center in Bahrain, causing damage. Iran has also attacked energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and attacked several ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for one-fifth of global oil and gas transport, leading to a significant increase in global oil and gas prices. The US Department of State has advised its citizens to evacuate 12 countries in the Middle East due to security risks. However, widespread airspace closures have made it difficult for many US citizens to leave the region. President Trump stated that military operations are expected to last four to five weeks but are prepared for a longer duration. Regarding the casualty toll from this fierce conflict, the Iranian Red Crescent Society reported that attacks by the US and Israel have resulted in at least 555 deaths in Iran. In Israel, where several locations were hit by Iranian missiles, 11 people were killed. Additionally, retaliatory attacks by Israel on Lebanon, in response to attacks by Hezbollah, have caused over 50 deaths. The US claims six of its soldiers were killed; these soldiers were part of the Army serving in logistics in Kuwait. Three people died in the UAE, one in Kuwait, and another in Bahrain. As a Cambodia correspondent, it is analyzed that these regional conflicts are unlikely to have a significant direct impact on Cambodia's economy. However, the surge in global oil prices could indirectly lead to price increases in Cambodia by raising import costs.
