Bangkok Faces Oil and Chemical Spill Crisis, Emergency Meeting Held

Following a series of oil and chemical pollution incidents in Bangkok's waterways, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, convened an emergency meeting of the Committee for Water Pollution Management due to Oil and Chemicals. The committee discussed urgent response measures. Recently, oil contamination has been detected at multiple points in canals and drainage systems within Bangkok. Specifically, on September 8th, oil was found in the drainage system near Chuea Phleng Road, under the Rama 3 elevated highway, at the border of Khlong Toei and Yan Nawa districts. Authorities have so far recovered over 22,000 liters of oil from this location. Furthermore, the meeting is expected to address the risks associated with numerous data centers that store hundreds of thousands of liters of fuel oil. This concern stems from past incidents, such as an oil leak from a data center in the Rama 9 area that caused contamination and affected nearby communities. The committee's scope of consideration also includes measures to prevent and resolve water pollution caused by the leakage of oil and chemicals into the sea, coastal areas, rivers, and canals. Prior to the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Pipat stated that as this was the committee's inaugural meeting, thorough discussions among relevant parties would take place first, after which information would be provided to the press.
