Hanoi Seeks Public Input on Hoan Kiem Lake Area Redevelopment

Hanoi is actively seeking public input on proposed amendments to the landscape and spatial planning for Hoan Kiem Lake and its surrounding areas. This initiative aims to concretize the city's 100-year vision, focusing on preserving the historic urban core and enhancing the value of cultural heritage and landscapes. The plan envisions Hoan Kiem Lake as a grand public square, integrated with the August Revolution Square and the Hanoi Opera House to create a "Historical - Cultural - Artistic" space. The expansion of the area is primarily planned for the northern and eastern sides of the lake, incorporating new squares, parks, community spaces, and landmark architectural structures. Some existing facilities, such as the City People's Council and Committee headquarters, and the Children's Palace, may be considered for demolition or renovation to facilitate this spatial restructuring. A key element drawing significant attention is the proposed expansion of the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square on the north side of the lake, alongside the construction of an approximately 36-meter-high Arch of Triumph. This monument is intended to become a symbol for Hanoi, with a design inspired by crane wings, creating a visual axis towards Hoan Kiem Lake and Turtle Tower (Tháp Rùa). Since the announcement of these proposals, a considerable volume of feedback has been received regarding the spatial organization, new architectural elements, and the preservation of the landscape and heritage around Hoan Kiem Lake. Concerns have been particularly voiced about the location and architectural design of the proposed Arch of Triumph. During dialogues with residents, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, Vũ Đại Thắng, emphasized that the current phase is solely for gathering opinions on landscape and spatial arrangements. He stressed that the construction of any new structures would be a subsequent step, requiring thorough consideration of expert and public views. "We aim to maximally absorb public opinions to create a Hoan Kiem Lake space that develops while retaining its unique identity," stated Chairman Thắng. Residents have expressed a strong desire to maintain the lake's "tranquil" and "ancient" atmosphere. One resident voiced concerns, stating, "While a more spacious area is good, losing the old is regrettable." Discussions are ongoing regarding the appropriateness of modern structures like the Arch of Triumph within the historical context of the lake.
