Cambodia Reaffirms Human Rights Commitment at UN Council

GENEVA, Sept 17, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights during the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, its delegation said Thursday. Kheang Mengchhun, second secretary of Cambodia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva, delivered the country’s statement during the General Debate under Agenda Item 3, which covers civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, as well as the right to development. Mengchhun welcomed reports by the UN Secretary‑General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, saying Cambodia remained committed to advancing rights and highlighted government efforts in several areas. These included support for indigenous communities, progress toward universal health coverage, poverty reduction, inclusive development and gender equality. Officials said the statement was part of Cambodia’s engagement with the UN human rights system, outlining reported progress and policy priorities while reaffirming cooperation with international mechanisms. The Human Rights Council is the UN’s main intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Its 63rd regular session runs from Sept 7 to Oct 7 in Geneva, with Agenda Item 3 covering a broad range of rights issues. Cambodia’s delegation said its participation reflected a commitment to constructive dialogue and multilateral cooperation in advancing human rights.
