Ratanakiri Health Center Strengthens Maternal and Infant Care to Reduce Mortality Rates

The Teun Health Center, located in Kon Mom District, Ratanakiri Province, is strengthening its maternal and infant care services to reduce mortality rates. Through guidance to mothers and guardians, provision of nutrient-rich complementary foods to young children, and the use of modern equipment to monitor pregnant women for danger signs, the center aims to support health maintenance and healthy growth. According to Mr. Pi Bunnaara, Director of the Teun Health Center, the facility serves three communes: Teun, Ta Ong, and Siri Mongkol, with a target population of approximately 14,575 people. It operates under the Ratanakiri Provincial Health Department's Operational District Health Office of Lum. To reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, the health center operates 24 hours a day with medical staff, including two skilled midwives, to handle deliveries and antenatal check-ups. He further explained that the Ministry of Health has implemented a three-color coding system to assess the risk levels of pregnant women: blue (normal), yellow (at risk), and red (danger). This allows for continuous monitoring of pregnant women's health and preparation for emergencies. If abnormal signs are detected early during labor, medical personnel can respond promptly. In cases exceeding the health center's capacity, patients are promptly referred to higher-level hospitals. When necessary, medical teams and specialized midwives may also provide assistance by visiting communities or homes. The Health Center Director strongly urges pregnant women to undergo regular check-ups and to seek medical attention immediately if any abnormal signs appear, emphasizing that timely access to care is a crucial step in protecting both the mother and infant. Service users have expressed satisfaction with the center's services. Ms. Nghet Sadu, a pregnant woman, stated that the medical team is friendly, provides regular health guidance and appointment management, and offers equitable services regardless of race or religion. Ms. Sohati Sarifas echoed similar sentiments, noting that during her second pregnancy check-up, the medical staff were welcoming and provided equal service without discrimination between ethnic minorities, Muslims, or Khmer people. This health center plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of mothers and infants, particularly within ethnic minority communities, by improving service quality, enhancing outreach to local areas, promoting health consultations and education, and strengthening the response and timely referral system for high-risk cases.
