Vietnam: No Change in 2027 Military Conscription Health Checks; 5 Exemptions, 7 Postponements Possible

In Vietnam, it has been clarified that there will be no changes to the health check standards for military conscription in 2027. Based on the current 'Law on Military Obligation,' health checks begin annually on November 1 and extend through December 31. Therefore, the health checks for 2027 military conscription will take place from November 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026. Prior to the health examinations, local authorities will conduct preliminary health screenings for military obligation. This aims to pre-select citizens who do not meet health standards or have illnesses that qualify for exemption from military service. Following this preliminary screening, it is anticipated that military service may be exempted in five cases and temporarily postponed in seven cases. However, the specific criteria for exemption and postponement, as well as the qualifying illnesses, will be applied within the scope defined by current law. Under Vietnam's one-party system, military conscription is strictly enforced as a citizen's duty, positioned as essential for social stability and defense capability maintenance. In recent years, while Vietnam's economy has achieved remarkable growth, it also faces security challenges due to a complex regional situation and relations with China. Against this backdrop, the conscription system is expected to remain a priority.
