Globe Telecom has officially launched the Philippines’ first commercially approved satellite-to-mobile or direct-to-cell (DTC) service in partnership with Starlink. In an announcement dated June 29, Globe said the commercial rollout followed regulatory approval from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), allowing the telecommunications firm to operate Starlink’s DTC services nationwide. The approval was signed by NTC Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez. Through the partnership, Globe said it is leveraging Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, which effectively serves as a “cell tower in space,” allowing mobile connectivity even when ground-based networks fail. “This new satellite-to-mobile technology enhances digital inclusion and accessibility,” said Carl Cruz, Globe president and CEO. “With the NTC’s approval for commercial launch, Globe can now extend its reach beyond traditional towers, ensuring that even in the most remote or disaster-stricken areas, Filipinos remain connected. How to use the Globe Starlink service The satellite-to-mobile service allows users to send SMS, make voice or video calls through compatible apps, and access navigation data by connecting directly to satellites while outdoors.
