Yangon-Mandalay Expressway to collect automatic road tolls via prepaid system starting September 17

For the public who wish to travel using the automatic toll collection system via prepaid payment on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, the TollPass RFID system will be opened, sold, and installed daily from September 17, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, according to the Expressway Maintenance and Supervision Committee. The initial service locations will be the TollPass Counters at the (0 Mile 4 Furlong) Toll Gate No. 3, the (201 Mile 3 Furlong) Sea Road Junction Toll Gate, and the (352 Mile 4 Furlong) Sagaing Inn Toll Gate on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway. Vehicle owners wishing to install the system will need to bring (1) a smartphone, (2) the vehicle to be installed, and (3) the vehicle registration card (Wheel Tax) from the Road Transport Administration Department to use the TollPass RFID system. The TollPass registration process involves registering via smartphone and installing the application, recording vehicle information, affixing an RFID sticker to the vehicle, pre-loading a minimum of 5,000 Kyats into the TollPass Unit TPU, and paying 20,000 Kyats for the RFID sticker and one year of service (which must be paid each time a new card is installed). After installing the TollPass system, when entering the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, vehicles must travel at a maximum speed of 20 km/hr in the dedicated TollPass lane at the toll gates. As soon as the vehicle enters, the barrier will automatically open, allowing continuous travel without having to queue to pay the toll. The toll collection system for passage will be based on the distance between the two toll gates and the rates set by the Road Department according to vehicle class. (For example, for a Class 1 vehicle coming from Yangon to the No. 3 Gate at Mile 0, 1500 TPU will be charged for the passage up to the Phu Toll Gate at Mile 115.) The money paid by TollPass system users will be converted into the TollPass Unit (TPU) system and cannot be refunded. The validity period of TollPass Units (TPU) is exactly one year from the date the RFID sticker is first issued. While payments will only be accepted in cash when sales begin on September 17, online payment systems such as MMQR, KBZ Pay, AYA Pay, and WAVE Pay will soon be available for payment, the Expressway Maintenance and Supervision Committee announced. The TollPass RFID system eliminates the need to install Onboard Unit (OBU) devices and manually top up cards like the previous Ez Go ETC system. It allows for topping up TPU via online transfer, and users can check their TPU balance, travel history, and toll deductions at any time through the phone app, making it a more convenient, compact, and secure system. The TollPass system was installed in a short period to facilitate easy passage through the six major toll gates along the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway.
