Cambodia Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights Protection in Meeting with UN Official
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed the government's strong commitment to human rights protection and promotion during a meeting with the new UN OHCHR Representative, Matilda Bogner. Both sides praised their constructive partnership and agreed to further enhance cooperation.
AKP Phnom Penh, July 10, 2026 -- Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn on Friday reaffirmed the Royal Government’s strong commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights during a courtesy meeting with the newly appointed Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Cambodia, H.E. Ms. Matilda Bogner. Receiving the new OHCHR Representative at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Prak Sokhonn extended a warm welcome and congratulated H.E. Ms. Matilda Bogner on her appointment. During the meeting, both sides praised the constructive partnership and long-standing cooperation between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the OHCHR. They noted that the UN human rights office has maintained its presence in Cambodia since 1993, making it the longest-standing OHCHR country office in the world. H.E. Ms. Matilda Bogner expressed her appreciation for the close and productive cooperation between the OHCHR and Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. She reaffirmed the Office’s commitment to maintaining close collaboration with relevant Cambodian ministries and institutions. H.E. Ms. Matilda Bogner also highlighted the OHCHR’s readiness to support Cambodia through capacity-building initiatives and technical assistance, in line with the needs and development priorities identified by the Royal Government. For his part, H.E. Prak Sokhonn reiterated Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to advancing and safeguarding human rights. He expressed appreciation for the OHCHR’s continued engagement and technical cooperation, which he said has contributed to the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to strengthen human rights in accordance with its national priorities. The meeting underscored the shared commitment of Cambodia and the OHCHR to further enhancing their cooperation and dialogue in promoting human rights through constructive engagement, mutual respect, and technical partnership.
