UN Adopts Vietnam-Proposed International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution for the "International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development," proposed by Vietnam. This initiative positions cultural diversity and creativity as drivers for peace and sustainable development. Vietnam aims to contribute to international peace and sustainable development through the protection and utilization of cultural heritage and the promotion of cultural exchange. This UN resolution reaffirms Vietnam's proactive role on the international stage and its utilization of culture as a key diplomatic tool. Under its one-party system, Vietnam's cultural policies are closely linked to national development strategies, contributing to national cohesion and enhancing its soft power in the international arena. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, it emphasizes strengthening international cooperation through culture, with this resolution being a part of that strategy. Furthermore, in Vietnam's relations with China, cultural exchange could potentially deepen mutual understanding. In recent years, while strengthening economic ties, Vietnam has also explored cultural approaches, and this "Decade of Culture" aims to gain international support as part of that strategy. This resolution is also expected to boost domestic cultural heritage protection activities and the promotion of inter-ethnic cultural exchange within Vietnam. For instance, in provinces like Tuyen Quang, where diverse ethnic groups reside and over 70% of the population comprises ethnic minorities with numerous cultural heritage sites, cultural promotion is anticipated. Vietnam and UNESCO have a 50-year partnership, and this resolution signifies the deepening of that cooperation.
