Phu Quoc Airport Expansion Accelerated for APEC 2027 Hosting

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has proposed accelerating infrastructure development plans at Phu Quoc International Airport to support the island's preparations as a host for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in 2027. Specifically, within the 2021-2030 planning period, the authority aims to expedite investment in a parallel taxiway system and a connecting taxiway north of Runway No. 2. This initiative is intended to facilitate connectivity with the aircraft maintenance and repair facility (hangar) planned for the northern area of the airport. This expansion plan is positioned as part of broader efforts to establish Phu Quoc as a model of security and civility for the APEC 2027 hosting. The Vietnamese government has adopted resolutions to remove hurdles for APEC-related projects, with infrastructure development being a crucial component. Furthermore, preparations for APEC 2027 are seeing progress in public-private partnerships, including a strategic cooperation agreement signed between Petrolimex and Sun Group. Under its one-party system, Vietnam prioritizes economic growth, and hosting major international conferences along with infrastructure investment is a key diplomatic and economic strategy to enhance national prestige and international influence. Hosting international events in resort areas like Phu Quoc is also expected to boost the tourism industry. However, rapid development may pose environmental impacts and changes to local residents' lives, making sustainable development a future challenge. In its relations with China, international frameworks like APEC serve as vital platforms for Vietnam to maintain and strengthen ties with diverse nations as it seeks to expand its regional influence.
