Cambodia Emphasizes Women's Contribution to Peace at UN Forum

Cambodia has highlighted the role of women in promoting peace and advancing a culture of peace at a United Nations high‑level forum in New York. Speaking Thursday under the theme “Women’s Leadership to Promote a Culture of Peace”, Chansophea Yaung, Cambodia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, said the country remained committed to empowering women through inclusive policies and greater participation in governance. She said Cambodia’s approach was aligned with its national development agenda and stressed the importance of women’s participation in decision‑making and public affairs. The forum, part of the UN’s programme on the Culture of Peace, focused on women’s leadership and their contribution to building peaceful and inclusive societies. Cambodia said its efforts to promote women’s participation reflected a broader commitment to gender equality, inclusive governance and sustainable peace. Officials noted that Cambodia has increasingly linked women’s participation with peacebuilding, conflict prevention and inclusive development. The UN’s Women, Peace and Security agenda, established through Security Council Resolution 1325 in 2000, calls for women’s full and meaningful participation in peace and security processes, as well as their protection during conflicts. Cambodia is developing its first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security, with support from UN Women. A situation analysis published by UN Women has provided an evidence‑based baseline for the plan. The issue is particularly relevant to Cambodia because of its experience of decades of conflict and continuing efforts to address the legacy of war. Women’s participation in peacebuilding and governance is seen as central to building more inclusive and sustainable peace.
