Quang Ninh Offers Over 8x Vietnam's GDP Per Capita for Math Olympiad Gold

Quang Ninh Province has announced a substantial reward of up to VND1.05 billion ($40,000) for students winning gold medals at international Olympiads, a sum more than eight times Vietnam's per capita GDP. This significant incentive aims to foster academic excellence and recognize outstanding achievements. The provincial resolution, effective August 1, sets a base award of VND700 million ($26,600) for an international gold medal. This amount increases to VND1.05 billion for students from ethnic minority backgrounds or those residing in designated ethnic minority, mountainous, or island communes. Silver medalists will receive VND500 million, bronze medalists VND400 million, and a certificate of merit VND200 million. Teachers who train these award-winning students will also receive half of the student's prize money. Furthermore, the province offers VND70 million for a national first prize, which is more than 17 times the national rate. For context, VND1.05 billion is equivalent to over a decade of earnings for the average Vietnamese worker, who earned VND8.4 million per month last year. National rewards for international Olympiad gold medals are considerably smaller, standing at VND55 million ($2,090), with silver at VND35 million and bronze at VND25 million. National-level prizes range from VND1 million to VND4 million. This generous provincial initiative follows Vietnam's strongest performance to date in international Olympiads. At the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, all six Vietnamese contestants medaled, including two gold. Vietnam secured fifth place among 119 participating countries and territories, an improvement from ninth in 2025. In chemistry, all four team members won gold in Tashkent, where Vietnam tied China and India for the most gold medals. This marked the fourth time since 1996 that every Vietnamese entrant achieved gold. The physics team also achieved its best result in Colombia, securing four golds and one silver, with two students scoring a perfect 30 out of 30 on the theory paper. According to the Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnamese students have earned 362 medals from regional and international Olympiads between 2016 and 2025, including 112 golds. The chemistry team has consistently ranked among the world's top 5 since 2020.
