JICA Showcases Vietnam-Japan Cooperation Achievements in Mekong Delta

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) participated in the "Vietnam-Japan Cultural and Trade Exchange Program 2026" held in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, aiming to broadly inform the public about development cooperation activities between Vietnam and Japan. JICA set up two booths at this event, which took place from September 11-13 at Luu Huu Phuoc Park in Can Tho City. At the booths, notable achievements from cooperation between Japan and Vietnam were showcased through exhibitions, exchanges, and cultural experiences. Staff, experts, and six JICA volunteers working in Vietnam participated, engaging in dialogue with visitors. This year's JICA booths focused on cooperation in five key areas: human resource development, agriculture and climate change response, infrastructure development, grassroots cooperation, and cooperation with the private sector. JICA has implemented numerous cooperation programs in Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region for many years. Notably, JICA and Can Tho University have maintained a cooperative relationship for over 50 years through research, education, human resource development, and the establishment of educational and research facilities that contribute to the region's sustainable development. The ongoing second phase of the Technical Cooperation Project with Can Tho University (CTU TC2) is focusing on promoting innovative solutions in agriculture, fisheries, and the environment to support the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about concrete cooperation achievements, such as research models for mangoes, ducks, and eels, as well as the application of environmental sensor systems and independent management of production logs in aquaculture. These serve as good examples of the outcomes of joint research between Vietnamese and Japanese scientists. Furthermore, JICA has supported the development of important transportation infrastructure in the region, including the Can Tho Bridge. These infrastructure developments have strengthened connectivity between Can Tho City and other localities in the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City, further solidifying Can Tho's role as a regional hub. During the meeting and networking program between Can Tho City and Japanese partners, Mr. Takashi Ito, a representative from the JICA Ho Chi Minh Office, emphasized the long-standing cooperative relationship between JICA and Can Tho City. He pointed out that JICA focuses not only on infrastructure development but also on human resource development, stating that these two pillars have significantly contributed to the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta region. Mr. Ito also introduced cooperation activities being promoted with Can Tho University, which aim to foster knowledge exchange and joint research with leading Japanese universities. These efforts are geared towards generating valuable research outcomes for society and nurturing high-quality human resources for the region. Additionally, he shared information about JICA-supported grassroots cooperation programs and volunteer dispatch. Through these activities, JICA has been working alongside local communities to address development challenges, contributing to the region's sustainable development. Through its participation in this program, JICA aims to deepen mutual understanding and connection between the peoples of both countries and to more widely promote the achievements of Vietnam-Japan cooperation for the sustainable development of Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region.
