Phnom Penh Districts Inspect Flood-Prone Areas, Urge Public Vigilance

On September 25, 2026, Mr. Chin Bunthoeun, Governor of Ruessei Keo District and Head of the District Unity Command, in collaboration with Mr. Thum Sam An, Governor of Prek Pnov District and Head of the District Unity Command, conducted a patrol along riverine areas. The inspection aimed to assess the general living conditions of residents and prepare for potential flood risks. This on-site inspection was carried out in accordance with the orders and recommendations of Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng regarding preventive measures and emergency response to floods within the capital's jurisdiction. During the occasion, the two district governors examined the water levels in areas bordering the river and assessed the living conditions and safety of residents in vulnerable zones. The primary objective of this work is to evaluate potential impacts and prepare timely response measures in case of rising water levels or flood events. According to announcements and recommendations from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology and the National Committee for Disaster Management, heavy rainfall can lead to increased water levels in rivers and streams, potentially causing floods in certain areas. This could affect infrastructure, property, and the safety of citizens. Phnom Penh, due to its geography adjacent to the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and the Prek Tnaot stream, and with some areas experiencing annual flood impacts from rainwater, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has prepared mechanisms and contingency plans for prevention, emergency rescue, and post-flood recovery. Local authorities have also continued to urge residents living along rivers and in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, follow news and notifications from the authorities, and cooperate with competent forces and local administrations to protect lives and property in the event of changes in water levels.
