Cambodia Conducts GIS and Drone Training for Coastal Protected Areas

In Cambodia's four coastal provinces, the Ministry of Environment, as part of the CamAdapt project, organized a two-day training on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and drone usage for rangers and technical officers in natural protected areas. The initiative aims to strengthen technical capacities in utilizing geospatial technology for data collection and analysis, monitoring environmental and natural resources, and supporting more effective management of protected areas. Over the two days, participants engaged in both theoretical and practical exercises covering GIS, Global Positioning System (GPS), and drones. This included learning about geospatial data collection, drone operations, processing aerial imagery, and creating digital maps. The acquired knowledge and skills are expected to contribute to enhanced capabilities in tracking environmental and natural resource changes, supporting protected area management, and promoting data-driven decision-making. The training contributes to strengthening institutional and technical capacities for managing coastal ecosystems and natural resources, particularly enhancing resilience to climate change. It seeks to improve the efficiency of environmental monitoring and management through expanded use of geospatial technology and reliable data. A total of 55 participants attended the training, including 7 women. They comprised officials from the Ministry of Environment, the Provincial Department of Environment of Koh Kong Province, rangers, and representatives from natural protected area communities.
