Remolona Among World's Top Central Bankers for Third Straight Year

MANILA, Philippines — Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona Jr. has been recognized with an A- grade by Global Finance magazine for the third consecutive year, placing him among the world's highest-rated central bank chiefs. This prestigious acknowledgment highlights his performance in crucial areas of central banking. Remolona was among 15 central bank governors who received an A- grade in Global Finance’s 2026 Central Banker Report Cards. The assessment evaluates central bank chiefs on their effectiveness in controlling inflation, achieving economic growth goals, maintaining currency stability, managing interest rates, and upholding political independence. While Denmark’s Christian Kettel Thomsen and Peru’s Julio Velarde Flores earned the top A+ grade, Remolona's A- places him in an elite group of global financial leaders. "What wonderful recognition! So grateful to Global Finance and to Team BSP! This will inspire us to work even harder to serve the Filipino people," Remolona stated in a release. He had previously received A- grades in both 2024 and 2025. His initial assessment in 2023 was marked "too early to say" as he had recently assumed the BSP leadership. In its 2025 assessment, Global Finance had noted the BSP’s monetary policy easing as inflation declined, and commended Remolona’s communication with investors and market participants, observing that lower inflation provided the central bank room to reduce borrowing costs. For the 2026 rankings, Remolona joined other Asia-Pacific central bankers such as Cambodia’s Chea Serey and Taiwan’s Yang Chin-long, who also received A- grades. India’s Sanjay Malhotra and Singapore’s Chia Der Jiun were awarded A grades. Joseph Giarraputo, Global Finance founder and editorial director, remarked that the top-rated central bankers demonstrated "the discipline, independence and sound judgment needed to deliver stability" amidst persistent inflation pressures, uncertain growth prospects, and rapidly evolving economic conditions. Global Finance has been publishing its Central Banker Report Cards annually since 1994, covering nearly 100 countries, territories, and districts, as well as several regional central banks. The full 2026 grade list is slated for publication in the magazine’s October print and digital editions.
