Thai Cabinet Approves 13 Billion Baht Development Projects for Southern Provinces

BANGKOK – Southern Thailand is poised for a significant transformation following the Cabinet's approval of a comprehensive development initiative during a mobile meeting in Songkhla province. The ambitious plan directs over 13 billion baht toward 96 distinct infrastructure projects across five key southern border provinces: Songkhla, Satun, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The initiative aims to dramatically boost local economies and enhance tourism, divided into immediate impact projects and larger, long-term regional mega-projects. Of the 96 proposed initiatives, 41 are classified as urgent projects, ready for immediate action with a combined budget of nearly 1.6 billion baht. These fast-tracked community plans are designed to deliver rapid, tangible benefits to local residents, addressing unique daily challenges in each province. Examples of urgent projects include the construction of a new concrete bridge in Hat Yai, Songkhla; the promotion of sports tourism and building an international convention hall in Satun; and coastal waterway maintenance and local road network improvements in Pattani. Yala plans to renovate local stadiums and upgrade road surfaces in older market areas, while Narathiwat will focus on upgrading major highway networks and building new public parks. The second phase involves 55 detailed policy proposals requiring sustained government support, accounting for over 11.4 billion baht of the total budget. These large-scale efforts are designed to fundamentally reshape the region’s commercial connectivity and economic potential. A major project is the 5.29-billion-baht development of a comprehensive Gateway to the Southern Border road network in Pattani, aimed at improving regional transportation and logistics. Pattani also proposed a 993-million-baht raw water pumping station and pipeline system to secure a stable water supply for agriculture and local consumption, essential for sustainable development. Modernizing regional aviation infrastructure is another critical pillar. In Yala, a substantial budget of 2.14 billion baht is allocated for the strategic expansion of Betong Airport, extending its runway from 1,800 to 2,500 meters. This runway extension will allow Betong Airport to accommodate larger commercial aircraft, significantly boosting domestic and international tourism. Complementing this, an additional 800 million baht will enhance the Betong border checkpoint to streamline crossings and support increased tourist traffic. The government is also investing in major civic landmarks, including the 788-million-baht "Yala City Tower" observation deck and a 580-million-baht integrated sports complex within the King Rama IX Commemorative Project. This massive 13-billion-baht injection is viewed as a significant governmental maneuver hoping to restore public confidence and stimulate regional growth. The strategic plan offers a balanced approach by addressing both urgent local needs and long-term infrastructure. The ultimate success will depend heavily on efficient and transparent implementation. Southern Thailand is now poised to enter a new era of modernization and economic vitality with these 96 approved development projects eagerly awaited by local residents and business owners.
