Mekong River Commission Participates in World Water Week 2026 in Sweden

Representatives from the Mekong River Commission (MRC) and its member countries participated in World Water Week 2026, held in Stockholm, Sweden. Their involvement brought experiences and insights from the Mekong region to global discussions on water resource management. This participation highlighted the Mekong's contributions to addressing global challenges such as transboundary water cooperation, climate resilience, and sustainable river basin management. A key highlight was the participation of MRC CEO, Ms. Busadee, in a Leaders' Table discussion themed 'Resilient River Basin Management Institutions: Enhancing Livelihoods and Strengthening Institutions.' She shared experiences on how the MRC has responded to climate change, increasing pressures on river systems, and the growing complexities of transboundary water management. She also emphasized the evolving role of the MRC in transforming shared data, knowledge, and analysis into timely coordinated actions that yield tangible results for basin communities. Furthermore, the MRC Secretariat and member countries engaged in an experience-sharing session with the Nile Basin Initiative on transboundary water cooperation. This session involved sharing national experiences related to floodplain ecosystems, fisheries and livelihoods, hydropower and dam operations, environmental impact assessments, and issues of drought and saltwater intrusion. These activities aimed to enhance opportunities for mutual learning and partnership building, while also bringing the authentic voices and practical experiences from the Mekong region to the global water dialogue.
