The National Unity Government (NUG) has completed the construction of a total of 10 underground hospitals across Myanmar, said Dr. Daw Shwe Po, Union Minister of Health of the NUG, in an exclusive interview with Mizzima. Parts 1 and 2 of the exclusive interview with Union Minister Dr. Daw Shwe Po will be broadcast by Mizzima on July 18 (Saturday) and July 19 (Sunday). These underground hospitals were initiated in 2024 when Dr. Zaw Wai Soe was the Union Minister of Health and were built with international donations. "As of now, a total of 10 underground hospitals have been completed across Myanmar. Some hospitals have already started operating, while others are in the final stages of construction or are being equipped with medical supplies," said Union Minister Dr. Daw Shwe Po. Previously, in June 2025, U Ne Phone Lat, spokesperson for the NUG Prime Minister's Office, told Mizzima that eight bomb-resistant underground hospitals were planned for controlled areas, and construction had begun on two of them. However, the number of completed hospitals has now reached 10. The NUG has explained that these underground hospitals are being implemented to provide safe healthcare services, as the military junta is deliberately targeting not only schools but also hospitals and clinics. According to human rights violation records dated July 5 from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), 88 innocent civilians nationwide were killed and 191 were injured due to airstrikes by the coup military junta during the month of June. The AAPP's statement indicates that a total of 67 civilians (28 women and 39 men) were confirmed to have died due to the terrorist killings by the military junta in June, including nine children under the age of 18. Of those confirmed dead, 46 died due to airstrikes, and efforts are underway to collect and confirm the list of the remaining 88 victims of airstrikes.
