Outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia Supports UNCLOS, Pledges Continued Aid for Border Issues
Outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, Atsushi Ueno, expressed support for Cambodia's use of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and pledged continued assistance in resolving border issues. The Cambodian side appreciated his contributions to deepening bilateral relations.
On the morning of July 7, 2026, Mr. Vongsey Vissoth, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in charge of the Council of Ministers' Office, received Mr. Atsushi Ueno, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia. Ambassador Ueno paid a courtesy call and bid farewell on the occasion of the completion of his diplomatic mission in Cambodia. During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth stated that Ambassador Atsushi Ueno is a good friend of Cambodia and expressed his profound gratitude to the Ambassador for his significant contributions to strengthening and promoting Cambodia-Japan relations during his diplomatic tenure in Cambodia, which led to the elevation of the partnership between Cambodia and Japan to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership." The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed his deep gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for standing with Cambodia for decades, from the stage of peace building, peacekeeping, rehabilitation, to sustainable socio-economic development. He particularly highlighted Japan's valuable support for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and other cooperation between the Council of Ministers' Office and the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh, as well as legal reforms, which are crucial reforms by the Royal Government to support Cambodia's long-term development. The Deputy Prime Minister also highly valued the Ambassador's efforts in attracting and facilitating the establishment of relations with Japanese investors in Cambodia consecutively, especially in Kampong Thom province recently, as well as facilitating the Deputy Prime Minister's visit to Japan in 2025.
