Visayas Labor Groups Demand P250 Daily Wage Hike

Labor groups in the Visayas region of the Philippines have submitted a petition to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) seeking a P250 increase in the daily minimum wage. The proposed hike covers workers in Western Visayas, including the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and Guimaras, as well as Negros Occidental. According to Mark Vernon Dioquino, spokesperson for RTWPB-Western Visayas, the board has received the petition and has commenced consultations among representatives from the government, labor, and business sectors. The newly formed Negros Island Region has yet to establish its own regional wage board, thus remaining under the jurisdiction of RTWPB-Western Visayas for now. Dioquino stated that employers have not yet submitted their reply to the proposal. The board will carefully consider economic indicators, the cost of living, and the capacity and viability of businesses and industries before making a decision on the petition. While no final date has been set, the RTWPB-Western Visayas is expected to reach a conclusion by November 19. This wage increase demand highlights the minimum wage system in the Philippines and the need for improved labor conditions to cope with inflation and rising living costs.
