Chinese Embassy Pledges to Combat Fake News Amidst Rumors of Cooling China-Cambodia Ties

The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia has pledged to combat fake news that attempts to undermine the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries. This commitment comes in response to the spread of rumors online alleging that China-Cambodia relations are "cooling down" and that cooperation projects are being "hindered." Mr. Jiang Nan, a senior advisor at the Chinese Embassy, stated that while the new revolution in science and technology is rapidly advancing, information technology has brought unprecedented opportunities for economic and social development. However, he noted that a significant amount of fake news is spreading rapidly through social media and new technologies, crossing national borders and language barriers. This causes public misunderstanding, damages social trust, and impacts relations between countries and regional cooperation, posing a common challenge for the international community, including the Lancang-Mekong countries. "The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia is also firmly committed to fighting fake news," Mr. Jiang emphasized. "In the past, there have been online rumors alleging that China-Cambodia relations are cooling down and that cooperation projects are being hindered." He added that some media outlets have also quoted Chinese and Cambodian officials, either by cutting and pasting or by misinterpreting the original context. In response, the embassy has created a special section titled "Rumors and Truth about China-Cambodia Relations" to help the public distinguish between fact and fiction. The embassy also regularly uses its official Facebook account to clarify and refute fake news related to China and China-Cambodia relations. "We firmly believe that as long as we cooperate, we will be able to narrow the spread of fake news and maintain a favorable environment for friendly cooperation between China and Cambodia," he said. China actively supports cooperation in combating fake news through the special fund of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation. Mr. Jiang expressed his pleasure that "fighting fake news" is becoming a widespread consensus in Cambodian society and is being transformed into practical cooperation across the Lancang-Mekong region.
