Over 20,000 kg of fish die in latest Laguna de Bay fish kill

MANILA, Philippines — More than 20,000 kilograms of tilapia and bighead carp have died in another fish kill in Laguna de Bay, affecting more than 30 fish cages covering over 7 hectares in Jala-jala, Rizal. Fishers’ group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) said Tuesday that initial losses were estimated at P700,000. This incident highlights the recurring environmental issues plaguing Laguna de Bay, with pollution and overstocking often cited as primary causes for past fish kills. The mass mortality not only impacts the lake's ecosystem but also deals a direct economic blow to fisherfolk who depend on the lake for their livelihood.
