Kazakh Investor Proposes Rice Husk Processing Plant in Mekong Delta
A Kazakh investor has proposed building a plant in Dong Thap Province, Mekong Delta, to process one million tonnes of rice husks annually. The province is strengthening environmental regulations to achieve sustainable development goals and address agricultural sector challenges.
Authorities in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap are strengthening environmental oversight at industrial zones and clusters, focusing on upgrading centralised wastewater treatment systems, to support sustainable development goals. Instead of burning rice straw after each harvest, farmers in Dong Thap now use it to earn additional income. By 2030 Dong Thap aims to become a rapidly developing industrial province, leading in ecological agriculture, modern rural development, and cultured farmers, ranking among the top localities in the Mekong Delta, with higher living standards, social and cultural progress, and ensured national defence and security. The proposed project would use rice husks as its primary feedstock, with an estimated one million tonnes processed annually using advanced technology developed in Kazakhstan. At present, the top priority is to secure a stable supply of raw materials from rice-producing provinces across the Mekong Delta. The project, launched in 2024, aims to address longstanding challenges facing the agricultural sector, including lengthy certification procedures, limited product traceability and difficulties in complying with increasingly stringent international standards. In the coming years, the city will prioritise attracting high-quality investment, particularly projects capable of driving innovation, technology transfer, workforce development and wider economic spillover effects. Under Vietnam's one-party system, balancing economic growth with environmental protection is a key challenge. Particularly in the agriculturally rich Mekong Delta region, the effective utilization of by-products from rice cultivation is expected to contribute to achieving both the dual goals of reducing environmental impact and increasing farmer incomes. The introduction of advanced technology from Kazakhstan signifies Vietnam's commitment to sustainable development through technological innovation. This also aligns with Vietnam's recent investment attraction strategy, which seeks to attract "high-quality investment" and strengthen participation in global value chains.
