At the 23rd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), Laos aims to expand its strategic role as a trade and investment bridge between China and ASEAN under CAFTA 3.0, with a focus on enhanced cooperation in infrastructure, digitalization, and clean energy.

The 23rd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), held under the theme “China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0: Opportunities for a Better Life,” has showcased a broader vision for regional economic cooperation. For Laos, this presents a significant opportunity to bolster its role as a crucial trade bridge between China and ASEAN. CAFTA 3.0 aims to move beyond tariffs and trade volumes towards enhanced cooperation in investment, digitalization, clean energy, food security, and stronger supply chains. This holds immense potential for Laos to expand exports of agricultural products, minerals, and energy to the vast Chinese market. However, market access alone will not guarantee success; quality, international standards, production capacity, certifications, and efficient logistics will be critical for Lao businesses to increase their presence in China. In this context, the development of Lao small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) is increasingly vital. Greater utilization of e-commerce, digital marketing, and artificial intelligence (AI) could empower Lao companies to reach Chinese consumers more directly. AI can also support businesses across various functions, from translation and market research to inventory management, supply chain planning, and product development. Reducing non-tariff barriers is another key challenge. For agricultural exporters, stringent food safety requirements, inspections, sanitary standards, origin certifications, and trade documentation can significantly impact the cost and speed of bringing products to market. Improving these processes is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Lao exports. The Laos-China Railway has the potential to evolve beyond a mere transit route between the two countries into a component of a wider China-ASEAN trade corridor. This could enable landlocked Laos to leverage its geographical position, transforming a perceived limitation into a strategic advantage as a land-based connector for major regional markets. Sekong Province, selected as Laos’ “City of Charm” for CAEXPO 2026, highlights the potential for regional integration at the provincial level, offering direct engagement with Chinese and ASEAN businesses through its agricultural products, tourism, culture, and investment opportunities. As CAFTA 3.0 progresses towards implementation, the challenge for Laos lies in translating these opportunities into tangible gains for its farmers, producers, businesses, and local communities, thereby solidifying its position as an increasingly important link between China and ASEAN by harnessing its geographic advantage.
