Japan Pledges Continued Support to Strengthen Cambodia Cooperation
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met with outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi on July 22nd. Ambassador Ueno praised the progress in bilateral relations and pledged Japan's continued support and cooperation with Cambodia. The Prime Minister outlined efforts to improve the investment climate, and both sides confirmed the continuation of cooperation in various fields including economy, security, and the digital economy.
On the afternoon of July 22, 2026, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet received Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Cambodia, H.E. UENO Atsushi, for a farewell call at the Peace Palace, as the Ambassador concluded his diplomatic mission in Cambodia. During the meeting, Ambassador Ueno expressed his high appreciation and delight for the continuous progress in the relations and cooperation between the two countries. He also conveyed his deep gratitude to the Royal Government of Cambodia for its consistent support and full cooperation, which facilitated the success of his diplomatic mission and led to numerous notable achievements in various sectors, including economy, trade, investment, security, and national defense. The Ambassador highlighted the increasing investment by major Japanese companies in Cambodia, such as Toyota, which not only creates jobs for Cambodian citizens but also brings in advanced technology and provides skills training. He affirmed that Japan will continue to provide support and cooperation with Cambodia to further strengthen and expand bilateral relations. In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet congratulated Ambassador Ueno on the successful completion of his diplomatic mission in Cambodia and highly valued his active contribution to promoting and enhancing Cambodia-Japan relations and cooperation. The Prime Minister emphasized the Royal Government's strong commitment to ensuring a favorable investment environment through the implementation of significant reforms, particularly the restructuring of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and the modernization of the tax system, to facilitate and increase the confidence of foreign investors to invest more in Cambodia. He stated that the Royal Government will continue to support all cooperation in every sector between the ministries and institutions of the two countries. Before concluding, the Prime Minister and the Ambassador exchanged views on further promoting cooperation in various potential sectors, including the digital economy, security and defense, as well as enhancing the connectivity of production and logistics chains through the development project of the deep-sea port in Sihanoukville, aiming to transform it into a significant regional logistics hub in the future.
