Vietnam Reasserts Sovereignty in South China Sea

Vietnam has reaffirmed its firm stance on its sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea (East Sea). The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the dispatch of personnel by relevant parties to features belonging to the Truong Sa archipelago (Spratly Islands) without Vietnam’s permission constitutes a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty under international law. The spokesperson stressed that such actions run counter to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) as well as ongoing efforts by countries to negotiate a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC). Vietnam presents objective and verifiable historical and legal proof of its maritime and insular sovereignty through displays, including in museums, underscoring the unyielding resolve, patriotism, and contributions of generations of Vietnamese soldiers and citizens. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity are considered paramount, with the South China Sea issue being a prime example. While maintaining cautious diplomacy in its relations with China amidst continuous economic growth, Vietnam has clearly indicated it will not compromise on protecting its own interests. This statement is interpreted as a move to check China's maritime expansion and an appeal to ASEAN nations and the international community to uphold an order based on the rule of law. Furthermore, Vietnam is expanding cooperation with the UN, international organizations, and friendly countries to strengthen its digital capabilities, promoting the use of science and technology and digital transformation in peacekeeping operations. This is seen as a strategy to enhance Vietnam's presence on the international stage while also aligning with domestic digital transformation initiatives.
