Bundaran HI MRT Station Undergoes Expansion to Accommodate Passenger Surge

JAKARTA - PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) has started to expand the capacity of the Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta Station ahead of the operation of the north-south phase 2A. The construction of a multifunctional space or extended concourse and three new entrances is now underway and is targeted to be completed by mid-2027. The project, which started in February 2026, has now reached 23.52 percent progress as of August 2026. Construction work underway includes prebooring at estuaries 1 and 2 and SPP drafting for open cut work preparation. The development is carried out to anticipate an increase in the number of users when MRT phase 2A begins operating. "The construction of this new multi-functional and entre room is part of the preparation for the potential increase in the number of customers during the upcoming phase 2A operation," said PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) Corporate Secretary Division Head Rendy Primartantyo in his statement, Monday, September 14. The development of the Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta Station not only adds passenger circulation lines, but also opens up opportunities for the use of the basement for commercial activities. The new area will have an area of approximately 4,400 square meters that can be used for retail, food and beverages, services, to partnership spaces. The additional space will be connected to the surrounding area through the transit-oriented development (TOD) concept, which is one of the directions for the development of the Jakarta MRT. "This addition is also part of the development of underground circulation and opens the potential for interconnection with commercial areas," said Rendy. In this project, MRT Jakarta will build three new entrances. Two accesses are on the west side of the station and one access on the east side. Two entrances will be equipped with stairs and escalators, while the other entrance uses an elevator that leads to the pedestrian area on Jalan M.H. Thamrin. Access to the new area will also be connected to the lift located at the Transjakarta Stop HI Astra Roundabout. In addition, MRT Jakarta also prepared the construction of a cooling and ventilation tower to support the comfort of the basement. Rendy said this development was part of preparations for increased activity at the Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta Station, which has been one of the busiest points in phase 1. "The Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta station, which reaches a depth of about 18 meters below ground level, is one of the busiest stations in phase 1 of the north-south line with an average of 450-500 thousand customers each month," he explained. The number of users is projected to increase after the 2A phase of the 1 segment of HI-Monas roundabout starts operating at the end of 2027.
