Nusantara Explorer Train to Boost Indonesian Tourism

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), the Indonesian state-owned railway company, is preparing to launch the Nusantara Explorer, a luxury tourist train designed to enhance domestic tourism and elevate the travel experience. This initiative is part of the celebrations for KAI's 81st anniversary. The train is being developed at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng, featuring a design that blends Indonesian traditional nuances with modern facilities. The Nusantara Explorer is conceptualized to offer more than just transportation; it aims to be an integral part of the tourist experience itself. It can accommodate up to 91 passengers, with 36 in private cabin areas, and includes various zones such as Signature Class, Advance Class, Compact Class, a Lounge, a Grand Restaurant, and a Kitchen & Crew area. KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated, "This train combines the beauty of Indonesia's nature along the railway routes, local hospitality, local wisdom, and Indonesian culture. We want to present a different travel experience for our customers." He emphasized that the train is designed to be an experience in itself. During its development, feedback from previous presidential use was incorporated to improve aspects like air circulation, internet connectivity, and hot water facilities, enhancing passenger comfort. The train is a modification of the existing Luxury Sleeper carriages. The first phase of development is 100 percent complete. The train has undergone its initial test run with the Directorate General of Railways in early September 2026 as part of the certification process. KAI Commercial Director Dendy Kurniawan highlighted that the Nusantara Explorer is designed to introduce Indonesia's richness to tourists through train journeys. "Tourists can enjoy natural scenery, heritage areas, and simultaneously feel the Indonesian atmosphere through the ornaments and services we present on the train," he said. He also noted the potential of many stations and heritage areas in Indonesia to become part of the tourist experience via this train.
