Laos Hosts Convention on Cluster Munitions, Focuses on UXO Clearance and Humanitarian Aid

The Lao PDR is hosting the 3rd Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) in Vientiane, underscoring the nation's commitment to addressing unexploded ordnance (UXO) and enhancing humanitarian aid. The conference, running from September 14-18, marks a critical milestone in translating political commitments into concrete, measurable actions. Beneath the tranquil and verdant landscapes of the Lao PDR lies a lingering shadow—millions of unexploded ordnance (UXO) left behind from decades of conflict. While international treaties and dedicated clearance operations strive to heal the scarred land, the true measure of this hidden crisis is etched deep into the lives of survivors whose extraordinary courage continues to inspire many of us. On September 14, Khamlavan Chanthavanh, President of the Lao Red Cross, met with Jürg Lauber, Vice President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and his delegation at the Lao Red Cross headquarters, reaffirming their commitment to continued humanitarian cooperation. Laos continues to grapple with the legacy of decades of conflict, with millions of UXO remaining in the country, posing a persistent threat to the lives of its people. In a separate development, authorities in Boten Zone, Luang Namtha Province, seized 35,600 e-cigarettes concealed among other goods during an operation to crack down on the illegal transport of such items. This incident highlights ongoing efforts to curb illicit trade within the country. Furthermore, Ms. Suansavanh Viyaket, Minister of Culture and Tourism, received the Executive Committee of the Khaen Lao Art Association. The delegation, led by Mr. Chaleun Yiapaoher, former member of the Party Central Committee, former Vice President of the National Assembly, and Honorary President of the Association, reported on the association’s ongoing activities and received guidance from high-level Party and State leadership.
