Former Monk Faces Trial in Cambodia for Inciting Social Unrest

A trial commenced on August 6, 2026, at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for Chea Vuthy, a 27-year-old former monk, accused of "inciting social unrest and seriously disrupting public order" through social media in 2025. He was arrested on April 1, 2025, in Battambang province and transferred to PJ Prison in Phnom Penh on April 2, 2026. During the proceedings, Vuthy and his legal defense team denied all charges, requesting the court to drop the accusations and release him from prison.
