Jakarta Police Urge Calm Amid Mall Fence Speculation, Asserting City's Security
Speculation is rife on social media regarding the installation of fences at several shopping malls in Jakarta, with some linking it to security concerns. However, local police on August 1 urged the public to refrain from speculation, asserting that Jakarta remains safe and orderly.
Police have asked the public not to speculate about the installation of fences at several shopping malls, which has recently been widely discussed on social media. The security situation in Jakarta is currently confirmed to be safe and orderly. Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto, stated that the local government, along with the TNI and Polri, is committed to maintaining public security. "We reiterate, there is a statement from the Governor of DKI that the current situation is still safe, orderly, and controllable," Budi told reporters on Saturday (1/8/2026). According to him, the Governor of DKI Jakarta, the Commander of Jaya Military Command, and the Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police continue to synergize to provide a sense of security to all residents and the community of DKI Jakarta. "The Governor, Commander of Jaya Military Command, and Chief of Jakarta Metropolitan Police jointly provide a sense of security to all citizens and the community of DKI," he said. Budi explained that the Jakarta Metropolitan Police continues to conduct early detection of any potential security disturbances, both through monitoring in the digital space and on-the-ground conditions. "The Jakarta Metropolitan Police also conducts early detection, both from digital and field conditions," he said. He added that the Directorate of Intelligence and Security, Directorate of Cyber, Directorate of General Criminal Investigation, Directorate of Traffic, and Bureau of Operations continue to take security measures to anticipate potential disturbances to public order and security. Regarding the proliferation of fence installations in several malls, Budi asked the public not to directly link them to security issues. According to him, the reasons for installing the fences should be asked directly from the respective mall management. "If asked about the fence installation, we ask to inquire again with the mall management about their intentions and goals. We should not assume," he stressed. Budi also urged the public and the media to be wise in conveying information and not to build opinions that can cause unrest. "We also urge all members of the public and media friends to be wise in providing information, not to speculate, and not to create public commotion or opinions with a sense of anxiety in August and September," he said. He reiterated that to date, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, along with Kodam Jaya and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, ensure that the security situation in the capital remains safe, orderly, and under control.
