AMI states that while the meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has alleviated concerns about her health to some extent, it does not change the fact that she has been unjustly arrested and detained for over five years. Therefore, the statement says, the meeting with the ICRC should only be the beginning, and regular medical treatment, contact with family, and most importantly, unconditional and immediate release are necessary. Similarly, the statement calls for the release of all political prisoners detained for their political beliefs and for the military junta to cease its oppressive methods. Furthermore, AMI urges Australia, ASEAN, the United Nations, and the international community to further enhance their efforts for the re-emergence of a genuine civilian government in Myanmar and for democratic participation.
