Myanmar leadership return to ASEAN meetings ‘still far off’, Philippine minister says
Philippine Foreign Minister Maria Theresa Lazaro stated that Myanmar's leadership is "still far off" from returning to top ASEAN meetings, citing ongoing assessments of its compliance with the bloc's five-point peace initiative.
MANILA — The participation of Myanmar’s leadership in top meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is “still far off”, the Philippines’ foreign minister said on Thursday. Myanmar, which is embroiled in a civil war, may not return yet as its compliance with ASEAN’s peace initiative, known as the five-point consensus, was still being assessed, said Maria Theresa Lazaro, who is also ASEAN’s special envoy on Myanmar. —Reporting by Mikhail Flores; Writing by Martin Petty; Editing by David Stanway
