Cambodia and Malaysia Discuss Strengthening Islamic Community Cooperation

On July 20, 2026, His Excellency Dr. Othsman Hassan, Minister Attached to the Special Mission, received a delegation from the Kelantan State Islamic Council (MAIK) of Malaysia, led by YABhg. Dato’ Haji Mohd Anis Bin Hussein, for a working meeting at the Minister's office. The primary objective of this discussion was to strengthen closer cooperation between the Kelantan State Islamic Council and the Cambodian Islamic community, as well as to explore possibilities and opportunities for contributing to the further development of the Islamic community in Cambodia. During the meeting, His Excellency Dr. Othsman Hassan informed the Malaysian delegation about the rapid progress of the Cambodian Islamic community under the umbrella of peace and the high attention from the Royal Government of Cambodia, led by the esteemed leadership of former Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, and continued by the current Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Moha Borvor Hun Manet. The Minister emphasized that the Cambodian Islamic community currently enjoys full freedom in practicing their religion and receives strong support in all sectors. He stated that the Royal Government consistently facilitates all aspects for the Cambodian Islamic community. Furthermore, he expressed hope that through this meeting, Cambodia would be able to draw upon valuable experiences from Malaysia to further strengthen the community. In response, YABhg. Dato’ Haji Mohd Anis Bin Hussein expressed his admiration for the leadership of the Cambodian government in promoting openness and ensuring excellent harmony among all religions in Cambodia. He further stated that the Kelantan State Islamic Council is pleased to contribute to supporting the Cambodian Islamic community by sharing experiences and mechanisms for managing social work. He also indicated that they would explore possibilities for cooperation in charitable activities, other Islamic affairs, and human resource development for the mutual benefit of the communities in both countries. For reference, the Kelantan State Islamic Council (MAIK) was established in 1915, making it one of the oldest Islamic religious institutions in Malaysia. For over a century, MAIK has played a significant role in managing Zakat (alms), Waqf (endowments), and various charitable activities for the Muslim community.
