Hundreds of Households Flooded in Dong Nai Due to Rising Buong River Waters

Hundreds of households in Phuoc Tan ward, Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai province, Vietnam, have been affected by localized flooding due to rising waters of the Buong River, disrupting residents' lives. The most severely affected areas are in the Mieu and Huong Phuoc residential areas. Many roads experienced deep inundation, with water entering dozens of homes and causing chaos. In residential area 9B1 of Mieu, water flowed swiftly and deeply. An underpass beneath the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway also flooded, making it impassable for vehicles. According to local residents, the Buong River's water levels rose rapidly from the morning of the same day, subsequently flowing into roads and residential areas. The low riverbanks in Phuoc Tan ward are believed to be the cause, allowing rainwater to overflow from the river into the community. This phenomenon occurs when water from upstream concentrates after heavy rainfall in recent years. In the flooded areas, the militia force of Phuoc Tan ward has erected barricades to block residents' passage, ensuring safety. Between approximately 5 PM and 6 PM on the same day, heavy rain fell in many communes and wards of Dong Nai city, causing localized flooding on some roads. A representative from the Dong Nai Provincial Hydro-Meteorological Station reported that heavy rainfall was observed in many localities, including Phu Hiep (97mm), Long Khanh (70mm), and Tan Phu (70mm). The Buong River, over 52km long, originates in the Long Khanh area, flows through Trang Bom and Bien Hoa, and empties into the Dong Nai River. This river serves to supply water and also plays a role in drainage and flood prevention for many areas. In recent years, Phuoc Tan ward has repeatedly experienced severe floods due to the rising waters of the Buong River. For instance, on October 29, 2024, a large volume of water from upstream could not be drained quickly, leading to deep flooding for hundreds of households in Phuoc Tan ward. Subsequently, on September 12, 2025, the area was again hit by floods, disrupting the lives and activities of residents.
