Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh Set to Become Centrally Governed Cities, Creating New Growth Poles

National Assembly deputies have voiced strong support for the government's proposal to elevate the northern provinces of Quang Ninh and Bac Ninh into centrally governed cities. Quang Ninh will transition to its new status on September 1, and Bac Ninh on September 20. Deputies endorsed both the government's submission and the verification report, signaling a unified backing for the initiative. This elevation aims to establish both regions as new economic growth poles in Northern Vietnam. Quang Ninh Province, historically known for its coal industry, has been increasingly focusing on tourism and port development. With attractions like Ha Long Bay and its potential as an international logistics hub, becoming a centrally governed city is expected to accelerate its development plans. Bac Ninh Province, on the other hand, has been a major driver of Vietnam's economic growth, serving as a production hub for numerous high-tech companies, including Samsung Electronics. Its promotion to a centrally governed city is anticipated to boost infrastructure development and enhance its environment for attracting further foreign investment. Under Vietnam's one-party system, such administrative reclassifications are often closely tied to economic development strategies. They are viewed as crucial measures to foster regional development, reduce disparities, and accelerate national economic growth. The establishment of these cities as new growth centers, particularly in the northern region with strong economic ties to China, is expected to contribute to the diversification and stabilization of Vietnam's economy.
