Comelec Eyes 80% Turnout in Historic BARMM Poll

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is targeting a voter turnout of at least 80 percent for the upcoming first parliamentary election in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on September 14. Comelec Chairman George Garcia expressed optimism, stating, "When we visited the barangays, we saw a high interest among the people." With the election drawing near, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its security operations and is strictly enforcing the gun ban. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. declared, "We will not allow violence to undermine the upcoming elections." Specifically, Lamitan City and the towns of Al-Barka and Ungkaya Pukan in Basilan province have been identified as areas of concern. More than 100 police officers will be deployed as Special Electoral Board members in these locations to ensure the integrity and safety of the polls.
